Through the Visionary (re)Generation competition, the University of Manitoba invited the world’s most accomplished urban thinkers to reimagine the university’s Fort Garry campus. Forty-five teams representing 17 countries took on the challenge and this exhibition showcases their exceptional work.
The creativity and ingenuity of the winning concept provides us with a starting point from which we will move from vision to reality. Together with our partners the university will further transform our campus and community into a place that enriches the lives of all who learn here, work here, play here and call it home.

“ Methods and strategies of traditional planning….of vehicular transport are being questioned in favour of models closer to earlier models of village structures.… However, physiological needs for private space, physical space, temporal transition and mental decompression are to be championed in the design of a new academic residential community.”

“In Anishinaabe, Endaayang is often used to describe 'our home' but its deeper meaning is 'the strands that connect all things in creation' – a concept that underlies every element of this plan…. Built for density and designed for people, the Endaayang will be a social, intellectual and cultural crossroads.”

“There is also a rare opportunity here, with such a large parcel of open, relatively undisturbed, flood plain land within the city, to reconsider the design and purpose of a new public park.”

“ The answer is actually being strong in carrying your own world around with you at all times. Your own native reality. It is then that you can be in almost any situation and function in a harmonious way.”

“ A city that anticipates the future: Our proposal for Fort Garry campus evolves with time. It is not solid but liquid. Time has always been the construction material of the remarkable cities. In fact, the bases of this competition show a great concern with the future and with a system that allows a flexible construction program based on phases.”

“ 100 years back/100 years forward: envisioning a sustainable campus community. Our goal is to design for the long- term, to build upon the beauty and historic character of the Fort Garry campus, to support the City of Winnipeg, and to create a replicable and implementable model of sustainability at the community level.”
